MEIN WIEN / MY VIENNA

The fourth season of wiener wortstaetten will be completely dedicated to its home town. We have put together an ensemble of authors who will write short one-act plays about Vienna from totally personal perspectives. The fundamental difference between this project and more traditional theatrical commissions is the exchange of ideas between the authors during the course of the writing process. In monthly meetings they will discuss ideas, concepts and texts in order to develop an appropriate form for this evening in a team effort.

Within the framework of the event Schreibwetterberichte (“Writing weather reports”) and in collaboration with the Volkstheater Wien, we will give reports on the current states of affairs of this process.
While at our first convention on December 2nd 2008 the ensemble of authors introduced themselves in the form of short readings, the laboratory-character of this writing project was the centre of attention at our second gathering on March 10th. Supported by actors of the Volkstheater we presented the first material for scenes.
The third event of this kind will take place at the beginning of June and will include first drafts of the plays in a staged reading.

The world première of „Mein Wien“/“My Vienna” will take place under the auspices of the festival Roter Oktober 2009 (“Red October”).

wiener wortstaetten is a unique, intercultural author-theatre-project, launched in 2005 by Hans Escher and Bernhard Studlar, which encourages discussion and networking between Austrian and international authors. Centred around authors originating mostly from Eastern Europe who live in Vienna, whose native language is not German but who write in German, an international network should be created over the years to establish an intercultural exchange and a centre for contemporary European drama in Vienna.
